CHERY'S TRADING POST: BRINGING NATIVE ART INTO YOUR WORLD

Dreamcatchers, carvings, Ravens, Eagles and Orcas—Welcome to our world. If you are here, you share our passion for Indigenous art.

Perhaps you love the beautiful lines of our Northwest carving or the bold colours from the many paintings and prints we carry from the artists who live to the south of us, but whatever the reason, you are in the right place.

We get you! We love them, too. It is a passion for us that became a family business. It has been a source of joy, of new and strengthening friendships with customers, artists, vendors, festival sponsors, dancers, singers, drummers—the list goes on!

When you choose a beautiful piece from our Native family-owned and operated store, you are helping to lift up an artist but also their families, our family and our shared communities.

We bring in the work of those who are deeply rooted in culture and traditional practice.

Each piece you view from an artist is a testament to many years of practicing their art and living their cultural and artistic values.

We carry a range of Native art pieces you can bring into your home or give as gifts. Much of the beautiful work reflects the talented artists from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia but we do carry work from farther afield—particularly from the Native Southwest of the USA.

We have a fine selection of Northwest Coast Native Jewelry, Hand Carved Cedar Wall Panels, Cedar Carvings, First Nation Prints, Traditional Indigenous Blankets, Authentic, Handsewn Traditional Moccasins, Dream Catchers and a wide selection of Indigenous Clothing to choose from. And, yes, we ship!

When you make your final selection—and we know it is hard to choose—your choice honours the artist, their lineage, their elders and their teachers before them—and we honour you with our promise to select only the very best, authentic art for you to choose from.

Thank you for sharing our passion. We hope to meet you in person—if we haven't already—at one of the many Indigenous Events in the Pacific Northwest.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST NATIVE CARVINGS

Carving is an ancient tradition amongst Northwest Coast First Nations of the Pacific Northwest.

Beautiful and ornate, simple and utilitarian, everyday objects and ceremonial items—such is the diverse nature of Pacific Northwest Coast Native Carvings.

These highly prized works of art grace public buildings, private collections and local museums and galleries.

As you explore the Pacific Northwest, you come across ingenious and skilled examples of furniture, houses, serving dishes, cooking utensils, storage boxes, canoes, masks, rattles, paddles, talking sticks and many other items carved and painted with bold lines, deep grooves and distinctive Formline shapes.

Totem and Welcome Poles greet you as you approach First Nation communities. They speak of the families who live there, tell the stories of their deeds, their ancestors and the Supernatural Beings who share our spirit world. It is an artform that takes years to develop masterful carving skills.

Artists work with established carvers to learn the various tools and techniques that transform select pieces of Cedar and other carving materials into beautiful works of art.

At Cheryl's Trading Post, we choose Authentic, hand carved Masks, Headdresses, Paddles, Wall Panels and Plaques, Bowls, Bentwood Boxes and Chests, Totem Poles, Rattles, Talking Sticks, Pendants and Miniature Masks and Totem Poles that represent the very best of this Indigenous Tradition.

DANCE, SONG, DRUM & COLOUR: KAMLOOPA POWWOW

Dance, song, drum & colour—the Kamloopa Powwow is a feast for your senses and your spirit.

The festival is hosted by the Kamloopa Powwow Society who work hard to plan and roll out this lively, fun-filled three (3) day event.

You will want to rest up before you go as the days start early and end late—and are jam-packed throughout with events you will not want to miss.

The Kamloopa Powwow has grown over the years into a world-class celebration of vibrant Indigenous Culture at the 43rd Annual Kamloopa Powwow taking place June 28-30, 2024 at the Arbour, a beautiful Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc Special Events Facility within Secwepemcúl’ecw—the Traditional homelands of the Secwepemc Nation.

The Secwepemc Nation was at one time thirty-two communities separate and independent of one another, but united by a common language, customs, ceremonies and traditions.

You’ll witness some of those customs and hear many languages shared at the Kamloopa Powwow. A Powwow is a chance to come together. It is a time of celebration. It is a space to share our cultures, uplift our spirits and to enjoy the art of the dance, the beauty of our songs and to practice the Traditions of our ancestors.

The Kamloopa Powwow is a very popular event. Each year more than 500 dancers and drummers descend onto the festival grounds in a riot of colour, drumming, singing, dancing—Traditional, Grass, Fancy, Jingle, Chicken—from Tiny Tots to Golden Age dancers, Princess Pageants and visiting Royalty.

It is a must-see event that will fill you with song and joy. You will be smiling through and through from 8:30AM when the facilities open to when the dancing settles down and the colours are retired at midnight.

If you would like to join in for the dancing, you will want to register before the start of the festival. You'll need to self identify as Indigenous, wear the number issued to you and read the dancing festival rules before you get started. Each of the dancers is  judged for their skill, dress, and dance ability. There are also other rules you will want to know before you get started.

Dancing is good for your spirit and your wallet. There are great financial prizes to be won. Prize monies for 2023 were $96,700 with each category paying our $150 to $1,000.

If you do decide to dance and take some pictures, be sure to send them to us. We would love to see your outfits and learn more about each of your choices and what they mean to you and your family. If you share on Instagram, feel free to tag us @cherylstradingpost so we can enjoy the festival through your eyes.

And you'll be in good company. There are dancers and attendees from all across Turtle Island—Canada and the United States. Many of those who have attended once come again and again to share in the atmosphere of dance, drum, song, colour—and of course the great food and variety of vendors.

We have enjoyed the Kamloopa Powwow for many years and wanted to share some things it is good to know before you go. Friends often ask us where to stay or how to get there. We have put a little section below in case it is helpful to you.

JAY SIMEON HAIDA SILVER REPOUSSE WOLF BRACELET

Jay Simeon, Haida Sterling Silver Repousse Wolf Bracelet
An exceptional piece—Jay Simeon Haida Silver Repousse Wolf Bracelet. It is an heirloom to be proudly worn and passed from generation to generation.

"When I was designing and making this piece it was Bill Reid who came to mind. And his massive contributions to the continuation of Haida art.

More specifically his work in jewelry and repousse and chasing. In a way it's my homage to him.

I've always loved jewelry and even more repousse. For me it represents the pinnacle of NWC jewelry. I wanted this bracelet to showcase my skills as an artist and jeweler. I wanted to push this piece to the max and I think I've done that. As well as having fine designing and engraving in it too."—Jay Simeon

We are truly honoured to showcase this masterful repousse men's bracelet by the highly skilled Jay Simeon. The bracelet is 2" wide, 6 1/2" long , with a 1 1/2" opening.

Jay Simeon is Haida and #Blackfoot. His Haida heritage on his father's side. He was born into the Kaawaas branch of the Sdast’a.aas Eagle clan. His crests are Eagle, Supernatural Killer Whale, Frog, Beaver, and Raven. His mother is of Blackfoot ancestry. Jay was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta in 1976.

He began studying with his Aunt, Haida Artist Sharon Hitchcock when he was 14 years old and learned many aspects of jewelry making with Dwayne Simeon. He also trained in advanced design with Robert Davidson. He continued learning by studying books and museum pieces.

Jay Simeon excels at graphic design, carving wood and argillite, and creating silver and gold jewelry. His pieces are meticulous, one of a kind masterpieces. They are simultaneously traditional and contemporary—and much sought after and collected.

Jay is considered to be on a level with Bill Reid, Robert Davidson and Christian White, at the very top of Indigenous artistic skill and mastery.

He has been included in every major exhibit of Haida art for over 20 years and he received a BC Achievement Foundation award for his art.
